When the Association Suisse des Sommeliers Professionnels met Maurice de Mauriac,
it did not result in a traditional partnership. We can say with pride that the foundation of this partnership lies in the recognition of a shared philosophy. For sommeliers and watchmakers work with the same precious raw material: time.
Perhaps that is why nothing connects wine and watches quite as much as the people who devote their time and dedication to them.
A great wine is not created at the push of a button. It requires patience. Maturity. Experience. The ability to anticipate developments whilst trusting the process. The same applies to a mechanical watch. It, too, does not reveal its value at first glance. It gains significance through the years it accompanies, through the moments it preserves, through the stories it witnesses.
The L3 Sommelier Edition is an expression of this closeness.
Every L3 Sommelier watch, whether with or without a small seconds dial, bears the owner’s name and their personal membership number for the Association Suisse des Sommeliers Professionnels engraved on its rotor. This engraving is far more than mere personalisation; it transforms each watch into a personal commitment not only to a profession that combines knowledge, passion and lifelong learning, but also to time itself.
After all, true mastery—whether in the wine cellar or the watchmaker’s workshop—is forged over time.
And because the best way to understand time is to shape it yourself, to mark the launch of the L3 Sommelier, we will be inviting the first twenty owners of this edition to a watchmaking course at our workshop on Rämistrasse in Zurich.
This is where Leonard, Masha and Massimo Dreifuss carry on the legacy of their father, Daniel. This is where you not only learn how a watch works, but also experience the patience, precision and passion that go into every single timepiece.
This invitation is accompanied by a bottle of wine from Mathias Bechtel. Not as a gift. But as another chapter in the same story.
For wine and watches remind us of something that is becoming increasingly valuable in our fast-paced world: quality takes time. Character takes time. Relationships take time. And that is precisely why this watch looks so good on a sommelier’s wrist. It does more than just tell the time. It represents everything that time can bring about.
