Some watches begin with a clear vision. An initial sketch, a design idea, a purpose.
Some watches begin with a clear vision. An initial sketch, a design idea, a purpose. And then there are watches that take their time. They sit on a table, considered again and again, waiting for someone to discover something in them that no one has seen before. Sometimes it takes years for an idea to become a watch. And sometimes darkness has to fall before its true potential comes to light. The Pillow Ghost is one of those watches.
The idea for its case existed long before the Maurice de Mauriac Pillow itself. A distinctive shape that had found a place on our table of ideas, its story still waiting to unfold. We never forgot it. Perhaps we simply sensed that something was still missing.
The Pillow takes its name from its distinctive case shape. Its soft contours recall a cushion, something that nestles against you rather than imposing itself. Though the Pillow certainly has a mind of its own. It wants to rise above the wrist, to be seen, to assert its distinctive shape. At the same time, it settles against the arm with an almost effortless tenderness. A lovely contradiction, and one we are particularly fond of. Because good design does not always have to choose between standing out and fitting in. Sometimes it can do both.
Eventually, Fabian Schwaerzler, the designer behind our iconic L Series, turned his attention to the dial. He approached the case with his own design sensibility and developed an answer to a question that had been sitting on our table for quite some time. Suddenly, two ideas that had emerged independently found each other. The Pillow Ghost was complete. And it began to glow.
Because the Ghost has a special relationship with darkness. As daylight fades, its luminous dial comes to the fore. What is an exceptional piece of design by day becomes a small spectacle of light and time at night. The watch changes its appearance without losing its character. It becomes visible as so much around it disappears from view.

Perhaps that is precisely why the DJ duo Doppelgänger love the Pillow Ghost so much. Amid the beats, movement and people who want to lose track of time for a few hours, this watch feels remarkably at home. It dances along. On a wrist that plays music, follows rhythms and shapes the night. And while the lights flicker around it, its own glow gives time both clarity and meaning.
There is something lovely about that thought. A watch that comes most vividly to life in the very place where people would rather forget what time it is.
Those familiar with our L Series will recognise a kinship in the design. A certain clarity, an attitude, the art of creating a distinctive character with just a few elements. And yet the Pillow Ghost is no L. Nor does it aspire to be. It carries an echo of that design language while remaining entirely itself.
Perhaps this is one of the most beautiful things about independent watchmaking. That not every idea has to serve a purpose straight away. That sketches can wait until the right thought comes along. That a designer can complete something that began with an entirely different vision. And that a watch which spent so long on a table of ideas can eventually find its place in the midst of life. Or in the middle of the night.
The Pillow Ghost tells a story of patience, creative curiosity and the freedom to let things emerge that might otherwise never have existed.
Some watches tell the time. Others make it shine.
