After every Sächsilüüte, Zurich is in a frenzy. All the people of Zurich are inspired, have left winter behind and are in the mood for summer. They have enjoyed and loved the togetherness. In addition, the Sächsilüüte has been the traditional symbol for the end of work on the day of night/day of equality in Zurich. If work was over at nightfall in winter, the Sächsilüüt was a reminder that you could stop working in the light of day.
The pyre is constructed in the centre of Sächsilüüte Platz, on which stands the very precisely designed Böögg, resembling a snowman, the main character of this event. Very punctually at 6 pm, you know why, the fire is lit. The procession of the Böögg begins. Everyone waits eagerly for the moment when the Böögg's head bursts. This is when time stops. Legend has it that the speed at which this happens allows conclusions to be drawn about the summer. Sometimes it was 5 minutes, sometimes almost 60 - the shorter it takes, the warmer the summer is supposed to be.
The event is a top priority for the city and its people. You can tell by the fact that everything is closed and all the trams are stationary. Instead, 3500 people parade through Zurich, almost 500 four-legged friends, including camels, greyhounds and a bear. In between, 28 music societies that start at 10 a.m. and don't stop playing their instruments until midnight. An absolute tour de force for everyone involved, which is prepared all year round.
Worth mentioning are the balls organised by the guilds, which heat up the Saturday night in a summery spirit, and the parade of 2500 children with 15 young music groups, which ensures a steady stream of new blood for this tradition.
